Diabetes mellitus causes several types
of eye changes, but the most serious of these problems
is diabetic retinopathy. In this condition, the blood
vessels of the retina are damaged, or grow abnormally.
(See Frequently Asked Questions.) Persons who have
had diabetes for over 5-10 years are at the highest
risk, as are those who require insulin for blood
sugar control. Regular examinations of the retina
are critically important in order to detect these
changes in the earliest stages.
Laser treatment is sometimes required to slow the
progress of diabetic retinopathy. At Sneed Eye Associates,
we have the diagnostic capabilities to detect early
leakage of the retinal vessels. If retinal laser
is required, this is performed at the Outpatient
Surgery Center - which is located adjacent to the
Sneed Eye Associates Clinic.
